UC Davis PA Curriculum

Wondering about what it's like once you're in? How to pay for it? What you will be studying? This is the place - fire away.

UC Davis PA Curriculum

Post by jnicolas » Wed Jul 27, 2011 12:39 am

I was browsing through the PA program at UC Davis and I noticed that pediatrics is not part of the curriculum. I am very interested in becoming a pediatric PA and attending UC Davis for a PA certification as well. Will UC Davis prepare me for this specialty? Thank you!

UC Davis PA Curriculum

Have no fear - you\'ll get plenty of it. The curriculum is being revamped, and the peds stuff may now be worked into each class. We\'ve now had a specifically pediatrics class, plus the early peds from OB/GYN, and other material scattered throughout. There is no pediatrics rotation, so I would recommend you find a a pediatric surgery or pediatric in-patient rotation. That way you\'ll satisfy your desire and their requirements. Best of luck! -P

I also read from the Physician Assistant Forum that UC Davis is changing the program from certification to a Master\'s Degree. Can you confirm if this is true?

I am considering PA school at UC Davis. My main concern is that I will have quality time with my two children during the program - time to go to their soccer games, gymnastics showcases and help them with homework, time to listen without being stressed out. Do you think this is realistic to do? For those who have done the UC Davis program, how much time did you spend with your kids on average each week? And do you think studying pathophysiology and pharmacology ( or any other subject) in great detail the year before school would help in creating this time with my kids? (I really appreciate this website.)

Bshawley:

Sadly, I would have to say no, I don't think that's realistic. You really can't compare last year's class to this years; they've moved to a more traditional curriculum - 9-5 M-F for 30 months. I would suggest you count on seeing your family much less, and be thankful if it is something more than that. Remember: it's not just about class time. When you aren't in class you will be studying, studying, studying. This takes up plenty of time too.
