First Shadow - Suggestions

Post by austin_ » Mon Feb 17, 2014 7:54 am

Hi all,

I'm going to be doing my first shadowing later this week and am looking for suggestions as to how I might get the most out of this experience -- questions to ask, things to keep in mind, etc. Open to anything anyone might have to say.

In case it's relevant, I'm shadowing a cardiovascular PA and should be seeing several surgeries.

Thanks!

What a great opportunity!

I suggest you bring a small notebook with you to write things down that you want to know more about - either later on from the PA you are shadowing, or that you can look up at home. Be sure not to write down any information that could identify a patient.

Be sure to write down things you might want to know about the profession in general. Then when there's time throughout the day, you can bring those questions up.

Finally, it would be a good idea to watch a youtube video on scrubbing in for surgery. I don't know if they will have you that close, but it will help to be familiar with the procedure of putting on a surgical gown and gloves if you get that amazing chance. Finally, try if you can to find out what size surgical gloves you wear. They usually range between 6 and 10 and come in 1/2 sizes.

HAVE A BLAST!

PAUL
