Hello,
I am applying to a PA school that offers a distance learning program. If requested, I am required to write an essay with the following instructions: You must provide a Distance Education Essay describing your motivation and aptitude for this method of instruction as well as your connection to your home community and how this may impact your potential for success as a distance learner. Feel free to share any further evidence that demonstrates your potential for success as a distance learner.
I typed up a rough draft and think it is pretty good. I spent so much time writing and rewriting my CASPA personal essay that I am not sure how to start with this supplemental application essay. I started out with a story from my childhood. Do i start by trying to grab the readers attention again? I want to study and work in my own community because I think my area needs the attention. I am a critical care paramedic for a rural area and I see how important it is to have adequate healthcare for these communities. Also, I am proud of what we have and want to make sure that it stays. This is what I have. If any one wants to give me pointers, even if you don't read what I have....I would greatly appreciate any help.
My younger brother Andrew and I were at my grandma’s house. Our mom worked night shift, so Grandma watched us until my dad could take over when he got done with work. She only lived a short bike ride down the road. I was in the house playing when I heard a loud bang. My Grandma came tearing in the back door holding my brother at her side. His face was pitch black and I could see a large piece of bubbling skin on his cheek. I was horrified at the sight; I couldn’t imagine what my brother was feeling. She ran cool water over a washcloth and placed it on his face. My brother was just starting second grade, but he was a strong boy full of grit and adventure. He was attending to the burn barrel with a stick while Grandma was mowing the lawn. An aerosol can had exploded in the fire and my brother got the heat of it, literally. The next thing I knew, Grandma ripped out of the driveway towards town.
My family lived in the country. Luckily there was a small hospital in town, just 15 minutes away. I feared for my brother and what he was going through. The excitement settled and I was finally able to see him. Andrew looked like a mummy; his face was wrapped in gauze and all you could see were his beady little eyes. After already losing her first son, my mother was distressed at my brother’s condition. He was discharged just two days later, but continued with occasional doctor visits to follow up with his injuries. Our family was very fortunate to have a hospital so close to home that was capable of treating Andrew; it was convenient.
As a critical care paramedic I often transfer patients from the same hospital my brother was treated at for his burns. It is the hospital that my dad has gone to for his chest pain, the one my sister works at as a radiologic technician, and the one in which my family gathered around my uncle to say good-bye, at too young of age. Having the opportunity to study as a physician assistant in my hometown would remind me of the care that my family has received throughout the years, and how important it is that I provide the same care and commitment to the families and individuals in my community. I would have the ability to establish a close relationship and rapport with patients as a student that would transition into my practice as their healthcare provider.
I am confident in my ability to be successful in the distance education option. I have built relationships with physicians and physician assistants who have motivated and mentored me to ensure my continued success as a physician assistant student. Additionally, I have shown my success with online education; I am comfortable with the learning style. One of my biggest supporters, my boyfriend, is a director of the technology program at a local school district. He will ensure that I am prepared and have the technology required to achieve my goal. I am certain that the distance education option will give me the ability to provide quality care and commitment to the patients in my community, and prove a successful learning style for me as a physician assistant student.

Re: supplemental app essay
Hi, Tiff -
If you want to have your supplemental essay critiqued, you need to critique two other people's essays. Since there aren't any in the supplemental applications topic, please do two from the Physician Assistant Personal Statements topic (go to the main forum index to find that). After you have done so, post the usernames of the essays you critiqued.
Thanks,
Paul
