Are science majors preferred?

Post by ckeiner » Thu Dec 27, 2012 9:28 pm

Hi there, I am currently an undergrad student at UCSB working to get my bachelors degree. Up until now, I have been taking the unconventional pre-med route by majoring in Economics while also taking the necessary "premed" requirements (General Chemistry, Physics, Biology, etc...). I know that for medical school, majoring in a non-science is not a problem and can actually help you stand out and seem more well-rounded. I have recently decided (for many reasons), however, that becoming a Physician's Assistant is more suited for me. Now I am concerned whether or not my Economics major will still be okay for applying to PA school since it is a slightly different system and the programs are much shorter. Do you know if it is still okay to major in something like Econ as long as I still take the necessary prereq science classes or will it be a setback? It is not too late for me to switch majors, but I would still prefer to major in Econ because it is also something I have also been interested in but didn't want to pursue a career in it. Also, do you think majoring in Econ would hinder my options for finding good patient contact experience in the future??

Your opinion would be much appreciated!!

No, I think Econ is fine, particularly if it interests you. Just make sure that either as a part of your degree in Econ, or (more likely after you're done) to get the necessary PA school prerequisites.
