Yes, PAs can specialize. About half of them don't (they work in primary care). Here's the place to ask and answer about specialties and specialization.

Working in two different areas during the same time.

I was wondering whether PA's have the freedom to work in different areas at medicine at once? More specifically, would it be possible for a PA to work 3 days a week in an office setting (say pediatrics/family medicine) and a couple days in the ER, or in surgery?

Yes, definitely. It\'s a little less common because it\'s harder to get benefits from an employer that you work P/T for, but people do it all the time. One of our lecturers was a family practice PA who also did psychiatry and occasional gigs in the ER. By the same token, there\'s nothing that says you need to work in the same specialty throughout your career. PAs can and do move around depending on their interests and the job openings that are available to them.
