Hospitalists

Yes, PAs can specialize. About half of them don't (they work in primary care). Here's the place to ask and answer about specialties and specialization.

Hospitalists

So, I read some interesting articles on the mid-level hospitalist specialty and I think I am drawn to it because of the focus on the medicine and diagnosis as apposed to other more procedural specialties. Does anyone know more about hospitalists?

Yes, there are hospitalist PAs.

One of my mentors became one. She was pretty experienced - had worked in OB/GYN, Family Practice, Emergency, and Ortho, so I'm guessing you don't get into this specialty when you're green. People who are admitted to the hospital these days are REALLY sick (cost of health care deems it so). But if that's what you're after, you would do well to hook up with a physician/PA who practices internal medicine for some shadowing.

Thanks for the advice. If anyone stumbles upon this thread there are interesting articles on both PAs and NPs in Hospitalist practices and the various successes and defeats claimed by the doctors for whom they work.
