Addiction medicine specialty
Addiction medicine specialty
I am curious if anyone knows anything about the role of PA's in addiction medicine. I have always had an interest in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and would love to explore more about what it would entail but I am not really finding too much information about it. Would it fit within the psychiatry specialty? Is there any demand for PA's in this area? What would the salary be like? Hope to get some good feedback, thanks!
Re: Addiction medicine specialty
Good question!
I poked around a little and learned that there definitely are addiction medicine PAs. But I can find no society for them as hinted at by the AAPA website. I suggest you contact the American Society for Addictive Medicine. I'm sure they could tell you more.

That is a great idea, I will definitely do that, thanks!
I just have to share.. I am taking a CNA class right now and my instructor is a woman who has been in nursing since 1960... Cute little old lady. I told her about my hopes for PA school eventually and I just thought it was funny because she said... oh so you want to be the doctor's b..(insert profanity.. She didn't actually use the term but insinuated that word..) I just thought that was funny and actually really interesting to see how misinformed the general public is about the profession, even some who are in or were in the medical field. She went on to tell me that I "have to be an RN before I do that"... Smile and nod
The title physician assistant really is very misleading and misunderstood. I do hope they change that in the future. Physician Associate, like the forum post and podcast mentioned, makes a lot more sense in my opinion.

Re: Addiction medicine specialty
Wow, that's a funny story! She sounds like she 1) has no idea about the profession, except for 2) maybe being a little jealous...
