IMPORTANT: READ FIRST IF YOU WANT YOUR ESSAY CRITIQUED

Post by PaulK » Mon Jul 23, 2012 6:50 am

Hi, everybody! I've been really enjoying seeing all of the great work people are doing on personal statements. Due to time constraints, I am no longer providing free feedback here. But you can still get the feedback of other users by following the steps below.

IF YOU WANT FEEDBACK FOR YOUR OWN ESSAY, HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
1) Read 2 (two) other essays of other posters that you see here, and reply to each with a comment containing constructive feedback (see below for how). Please start with those essays with no feedback yet, or not much if all have some.
2) After posting your feedback, start a new topic for your essay, copying and pasting your essay into that new topic.
3) Give your topic/essay a descriptive title, such as "Paramedic with Low Grades for PA school," or "The Girl Who Faints at the Sight of Blood." This helps us keep them all straight in our heads.
4) Start your post by listing the usernames of the two essays you read and critiqued - I WILL BE CHECKING FOR THIS.
5) If you resubmit a revised essay after you receive feedback on an earlier version, please restart at #1 above and go through the process of critiquing 2 new essays again.

HOW TO CRITIQUE AN ESSAY:
1) Start with a "What I liked" section. Be positive. There's something good about every essay, and writers need to hear what they're doing well.
2) Finish with an "Ideas for Revision" section, where you give ideas about changes, deletions, etc.
3) BE CONSTRUCTIVE! SAYING "Great essay - I wouldn't change a thing" is not constructive or helpful. Every essay, no matter how strong, can be improved.
4 You may point out mechanical errors (misspellings, grammar mistakes, etc.) or more global things, like tone, flow, transitions, and what was and wasn't in the essay. The most helpful of all is including both.

Thanks for your continued support and encouragement!

I felt bad since no one has replied to your post :). Thank you for this site. I believe it has dramatically improved my narrative. I've completed my CASPA and all supplemental applications plus all the fees. So my wait has started and we will see what happens. I will reply to your post with any news I receive.
