Asking for LORs the 2nd time

Post by ssmith39 » Mon Feb 10, 2014 12:58 pm

What should someone do who has stellar letters, but didn't get in using them. I could find new people to write letters. Should I send the previous people an update letting them I didn't get in? When they gave me the letter in the first place, I told them, "I'll keep you posted" Whats the best way to do this? Does it even matter if I'll be applying to different programs?

Yes, I would definitely tell them how it turned out - you said you would, and that's having integrity.

Send the an upbeat email indicating that you are not going to let a little thing like not getting in stop you from applying again. Then briefly ask them if they are still willing to support you. You should get a feeling from how they reply as to how enthusiastic they are about you and your quest. How sure are you that your letters were strong? If they offer to write a new letter, let them, since it will likely be MORE enthusiastic than the first.

Let us know how this one turns out!

Paul
