An important part of becoming a PA is obtaining some health care experience (HCE). Questions about HCE go here.

Hello! I'm curious about public health fairs? I know that some schools only accept paid hours. But for those that accept volunteer hours, would participating at community health fairs (taking vitals, educating the community, etc.) count toward clinical hours? Thanks

I'm sure you would get some credit for that type of work. Again, it's a question of quality. Much of the time and that work is not spent working directly with patients but doing outreach and education.

I am hoping to get a job as a patient transporter at a large hospital. Has anyone done this for HCE? I am currently working on my Bachelor's and plan to work as much as I can while keeping my grades up. I also plan on getting my CNA in hopes of woring as an ER tech as well. Is one better than the other?

GatorPA9289 wrote:I know its probably one of the most common routes to get PCE, but I got my CNA license extremely quickly (1 week class). But to add an extra dimension to my certification I also became First-Responder certified which qualified me to work as a Trauma Tech in my hospital. Its allowed me to work with and care for a much broader range of patients--everything from chest pain, to appendicitis, to car crashes and gunshots!
Gator, where was this quick course? That is so fast!

Send out a request to your Facebook or Linkedin network
Search global health opportunities
Call your local health center
or homeless shelter
or children's hospital
or veterans association
or senior living center
You get the point.

Say you are willing to work for free… and do an awesome job, and you will also have the glowing letters of recommendation you need!

And, to top it off, you will feel good about yourself, you will develop the skills you need to love and care for another human being. Which is really what matters the most to be successful in life and as a PA.

I hope this helps,

Hey! I'm new to the forum. I will be applying to PA school this year and, like many others, am worried about my HCE/DPC! I have my BA Elementary Ed and taught for one year but decided I couldn't do it the rest of my life and be happy (I felt more like a police officer). I love science, like being intellectually challenged, and want to help people. My stepmom (an OBGYN) suggested looking into PA school and the career seems like a perfect fit for me. I have my CNA license and have been working at a psychiatric clinic part-time taking vitals and doing office work. I will start volunteering at the hospital in pre-op next week. I will probably only have 700 hours upon applying. First question: Should I look for another CNA position to supplement? I'm studying for the GRE this semester and want to be successful with that plus my 2 prereq courses while working and volunteering. Second question: Are taking vitals, administering assessments from time to time, and communicating with patients at the psych clinic enough for DPC?

Thanks in advance!:)

Qualifications for getting your CNA vary from state to state. In Florida, I was able to "challenge the boards" and not take a course. I studied YouTube videos on my own, took written and clinical tests, and passed!:) I know some states require a course; I know NY does. The silly thing is that my fellow test-takers paid for a CNA course and then failed the clinical portion of the test. I highly suggest watching YouTube videos on MyCNA and practicing the skills at home!
