Obtaining HCE

Post by AdamMessier » Wed May 14, 2014 6:48 am

I recently finished my first undergraduate year as a Pre-Physician Assistant major with a 3.93 GPA (3.90 BCP GPA). Now, I am working towards getting direct patient care hours. I am registered to take a Phlebotomy Technician course through the American Red Cross in June so that I may work per diem at the hospital I currently work at and hopefully at the local hospital where I go to school. I chose Phlebotomy because I did not see myself enjoying the work of a CNA, or obtaining regular hours as an EMT in my rural location. Now that I am completely registered for the course, I am nervous that the duties of a phlebotomist do not give PA school admissions officers the impression that the student is an effective member of the medical field. What are all of your opinions?

I think your concerns are well-founded. Phlebotomy, although relevant, doesn't give you a very wide range of healthcare experience. Have you considered volunteering in a clinic or getting some work as a medical assistant?
